Why the Things That Worked in Your 20s and 30s Don’t Work the Same in Perimenopause

One of the most frustrating things about life after 40 is feeling like your body suddenly changed overnight, even though you haven’t really changed anything at all.

You’re still doing the same things you’ve always done.

But now?Your body responds differently.Your stress feels heavier.Your emotions feel bigger.Your sleep is off.Your energy crashes by mid-afternoon.And the things that used to help no longer seem to work.

If you’ve been feeling confused by that lately, you are absolutely not alone.

When Your Old Coping Skills Stop Working

In our 20s and 30s, many of us could push through stress without it affecting us quite as much.

We could:

  • sleep less

  • skip meals

  • run on coffee

  • juggle everything

  • bounce back quickly

  • power through exhaustion

And while those habits may not have been ideal, our bodies were often more resilient at that stage of life.

But then midlife hits, and suddenly things feel very different.

You feel more anxious, and your stress feels unmanageable. Sleep becomes a struggle, and your body composition changes. You don’t feel emotionally resilient anymore.

And the frustrating part?

You keep thinking… “But I’m not doing anything differently.”

My Experience With This Shift

I personally started noticing these changes as soon as I turned 40.

In my 30s, if my weight started creeping up or I wasn’t feeling my best, I generally knew what to do.

I could:

  • tighten up my nutrition

  • move my body more

  • cut back on snacking

  • get back on track quickly

And my body responded.

I felt calmer. My moods felt stable, and I had more patience. I could handle stress better.

But in my 40s? Everything shifted.

Stress hit harder. Sleep no longer restored me. I was exhausted by two o’clock in the afternoon and needed more caffeine.

And my body started changing too.

The Weight Gain That Feels So Confusing

One thing I hear from women over and over again is:

“I haven’t changed anything, so why am I gaining weight?” Especially around the belly.

And that frustration is so valid.

Some women struggled with their weight their entire lives. Others never really had issues until their 40s.

Then suddenly:

  • clothes fit differently

  • the belly weight appears

  • energy drops

  • motivation changes

  • and nothing seems to work the same anymore

And it can feel incredibly discouraging.

Your Brain and Body Are Going Through a Transition

One of the biggest things I want women to understand is this: You are not imagining these changes. Your brain and body are going through a major hormonal transition.

Perimenopause can last up to 10 years for some women, sometimes beginning as early as the mid-30s.

And during that time, hormones don’t just steadily decline.

They fluctuate.

That’s why moods can feel all over the place. One day, you feel motivated and clear-headed.The next day, you feel emotionally overwhelmed and exhausted.

These fluctuations affect:

  • mood

  • sleep

  • metabolism

  • stress tolerance

  • motivation

  • body composition

Progesterone: The Calming Hormone

One of the earliest hormonal shifts in perimenopause is the decline of progesterone.

Progesterone helps us feel:

  • calm

  • grounded

  • emotionally safe

  • emotionally buffered

So when progesterone begins declining, women often notice:

  • more anxiety

  • more inner tension

  • trouble winding down

  • feeling emotionally reactive

  • difficulty calming their nervous system

You may feel constantly “on edge” without fully understanding why.

And when stress stays high, cortisol — our stress hormone — rises too.

That combination can worsen:

  • sleep

  • mood swings

  • irritability

  • exhaustion

  • emotional overwhelm

Estrogen: The Hormone That Creates Emotional Waves

Estrogen fluctuations can feel especially intense emotionally.

You may notice:

  • emotional highs and lows

  • brain fog

  • lack of motivation

  • feeling emotionally “flat”

  • difficulty making decisions

  • mood swings

  • feeling unlike yourself

One day, you feel energized and productive. The next day, you can barely get started on simple tasks.

You may even feel like there are “two versions” of yourself.

And honestly? That can feel really scary when you don’t understand what’s happening.

Estrogen shifts also impact:

  • metabolism

  • muscle composition

  • fat storage

Which is why changes in body composition become so common in midlife.

Testosterone: Motivation and Confidence

Testosterone also changes during perimenopause and menopause.

And while many women associate testosterone only with sex drive, it also impacts:

  • confidence

  • motivation

  • stamina

  • physical strength

  • libido

When testosterone shifts, women often say: “I think about doing things, but I just can’t get myself started.”

Tasks feel heavier.Stress feels harder.Procrastination increases.Confidence drops.Things that once excited you suddenly feel “meh.”

And again, it can leave women feeling confused about what happened to them.

Your Body Is Asking for a Different Kind of Support

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned through this journey is this:

The old strategy of pushing through eventually stops working.

Running on stress.Ignoring your needs.Under-eating.Over-caffeinating.Never slowing down.

Your body eventually says, “We can’t keep doing this anymore.”

It’s your body asking for support.

Perimenopause Is Not the End

I know it can feel frustrating when your body suddenly changes in ways you don’t recognize.

But I truly want women to understand this:

Perimenopause does not mean you are doomed to suffer.

With the right support, understanding, and lifestyle shifts, you absolutely can feel better.

I’m proof of that myself.

I had to stop approaching my body the way I did in my 20s and 30s and start supporting it differently:

  • managing stress differently

  • nourishing myself differently

  • protecting sleep

  • supporting my nervous system

  • slowing down

  • and actually listening to what my body needed

And that changed everything for me.
